Over £70,000 invested

The grants have been made available under the Initiative to Fight Cybercrime – launched last October – and will part-fund programmes aimed at law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and judges.


McAfee CEO Dave DeWalt warned that levels of online crime were bound to increase during the recession, adding:

A lot has been done to combat cybercrime over the past decade but criminals still have the upper hand.

The Council of Europe was set up to develop, in its own words “common and democratic principles” based on the European Convention on Human Rights and other reference texts on the protection of individuals.

It has been at the forefront of European efforts to fight online criminals, having developed the Convention on Cybercrime, an international treaty allowing prosecution of hackers, fraudsters and the like.

Visa and the Merchant Risk Council have signed up to its cybercrime advisory body – currently chaired by former White House security advisor Howard Schmidt – to provide new insight into effective means of fighting online ne’er-do-wells.
